What is CRX file?

File with .CRX extension contains Google Chrome web browser addon or theme saved as ZIP archive with modified file header. CRX container can store executable files, images, JS scripts or JSON objects. This file format is in most cases not recognized by standard decompression utilities, and as such requires dedicated software to extract it, for example crxextractor tool.

Chrome extensions can be installed manually by dragging CRX files to the ‘Extensions’ window. 1. Download the CRX file to your computer for the Chrome extension you want to install.

3. Use a CRX Extractor app -- I used CRX Extractor -- to unpack the CRX file and turn it into a ZIP file.

5. Go back to the chrome://extensions/ page and click the Load unpacked extension button and select the unzipped folder for your extension to install it.
